What I’m really terrified of is leading an average, ordinary life with a regular job and an invariable routine, planned holidays, an average household, fixed responsibilities and not doing anything different to be remembered by.

What disturbs me the most about the female celebrities nudes being leaked (aside from the obvious invasion of privacy) is the shame that is being put on these women for being seen to be “indecent”.

Something is wrong with society when these women can grace magazine covers, and editorials photographed in sexual way, showing their bodies and it’s deemed to be okay / acceptable because it’s done within the male gaze, or for an audience for men produced by men for a sex driven industry but when a woman expresses her own sexuality / has control over her own sexual image through “nudes” she is to be ashamed of her body is slut shamed. This incident is so tied to the shame women are meant to feel for expressing sexuality, loving their bodies and the way in which a woman’s body and sexuality are commodified and packaged for the male audience. It says that it is not ok for a woman to be a sexual being unless it is imposed on her through the eyes of the male gaze, or through the lens of commodified hyper-sexualisation.

As John Berger wrote “You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting “Vanity,” thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for you own pleasure”

Men / society always want to own a woman’s sexuality, and the act of leaking “nudes” is a horrendous way society can reclaim a woman’s sexual self expression and twist it into a way to oppress and shame women for their sexuality.
